What Is Spaced Repetition? The Science of Remembering Longer
If you've ever crammed for a test and forgotten everything a week later, you've already felt the problem spaced repetition solves. It's a learning technique that schedules review of information at increasing intervals — timed to land just before you're about to forget — and it's one of the most well-evidenced methods in learning science.
The forgetting curve
In the 1880s, German psychologist Hermann Ebbinghaus ran a series of memory experiments on himself, testing how quickly he forgot lists of nonsense syllables over time. He plotted the results as what's now called the forgetting curve: retention drops sharply within the first day after learning something, then levels off. Without review, most new information is largely gone within a week.
The critical discovery wasn't just that we forget — it's that each successful review flattens the curve. Review a word right before you'd forget it, and the next forgetting curve decays more slowly. Do that a handful of times at growing intervals, and the information moves from short-term to durable long-term memory.
Why cramming doesn't work
Massed practice — reviewing the same material repeatedly in one sitting — creates an illusion of fluency. It feels like you know the material because you can recall it seconds after seeing it. But that recall is cheap: your brain hasn't had to do any real retrieval work, so nothing gets reinforced for the long term. Spaced repetition forces effortful recall after a delay, which is exactly the kind of retrieval practice that builds durable memory.
How spaced repetition systems work
A spaced repetition system (SRS) automates the scheduling. After you review an item, you rate how well you remembered it. The system uses that rating to calculate the next review date — items you know well get pushed further out; items you struggled with come back sooner. The most widely used scheduling algorithm for this is SM-2, originally built for SuperMemo and popularized by Anki.
